Parliament endorses Optional Protocol to Convention on the Rights of the Child

SANAA, April 28 (Saba) - The Parliament on Sunday approved to Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure.

The ratification comes in the light of the Committee on Public Liberties and Human Rights on its study and review of the protocol, after the commitment of the government side represented by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Human Rights Ali Tayseer.

The recommendations included the approval of the Third Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure and recommended that the Government commit itself to the following recommendations:

1. The Government shall promptly establish the National Observatory for the Rights of the Child, to give to it the status of independence and professionalism in the exercise of its activities within a period not exceeding three months from the date of the parliament's ratification of this Protocol and to provide the Observatory with competent and qualified technical and administrative cadres in dealing with monitoring and referral issues.

2. The Government shall promptly submit draft amendments to the laws in force relating to children to harmonize them with the International Convention on the Rights of the Child and its annexed protocols ratified by Yemen.

For his part, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Human Rights pointed out that Yemen is one of the first countries to ratify the rights of the child and in 1991 joined the Optional Protocol.

He confirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Human Rights to all the recommendations contained in the Protocol.
