Moscow – Saba:
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed Moscow's concern on Friday regarding the methods and actions the United States is taking to resolve problems in the Caribbean region, which she said contradict its international legal obligations.
"We are deeply concerned about the military methods the United States has chosen to resolve the problem, which, more than anything else, constitute blatant interference in the internal affairs of Latin American countries," Zakharova said during a press briefing.
She added, "The actions of the US authorities directly contradict the United States' international legal obligations under the 1988 UN Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Friday that Russia hopes the United States will refrain from actions that could destabilize the situation in the Caribbean region and around Venezuela.
Peskov told reporters, in response to a question about the US announcement of Operation Southern Spear and the deployment of its forces near Venezuela: "Russia hopes that the United States will not destabilize the Caribbean Sea and the area around Venezuela."
He added that adherence to international law is currently "in a deplorable state."
Since early September, US President Donald Trump has authorized a number of strikes targeting ships allegedly involved in drug trafficking in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific Ocean.
