Moscow - Saba:
Russian State Duma deputy from Crimea, Mikhail Sheremet, stated that the 18th package of sanctions against Russia—which has officially come into effect—is a reckless provocation and will ultimately backfire on the European Union.
According to remarks reported by Sputnik, Sheremet said: “The 18th sanctions package that has come into force is essentially a reckless provocation and will rebound on the Western countries that adopt a hostile stance toward Russia.”
The European Union Council approved the 18th package of sanctions against Russia last Friday. The new sanctions target 14 individuals and 41 legal entities, and came into effect on July 19. Bratislava and Budapest had previously opposed the sanctions out of concern over the negative consequences of banning imports of Russian energy resources.
Russia has repeatedly affirmed its ability to withstand the growing pressure of sanctions that the West has been imposing for several years. Moscow has pointed out that Western nations lack the courage to admit the failure of sanctions against Russia.
Even within Western countries, numerous voices have expressed doubts about the effectiveness of these sanctions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously stated that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term Western strategy, and that the sanctions have dealt a severe blow to the global economy as a whole.
