New York - Saba:
Lisa Dutton, an official with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, called on the Security Council and member states to take the necessary measures to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and find a path toward sustainable peace, stressing, "These atrocities must end."
Dutton said that people in Gaza are suffering from shock and hunger, and are digging with their bare hands through the rubble in search of their loved ones.
Dutton added in media statements last night that frustration is growing among Palestinians "over the international community's failure to stop the hostilities."
She pointed out that the evacuation orders issued by the enemy for large areas of northern Gaza, along with the intensive ground operations, threaten further death, destruction, and mass displacement of civilians.
She noted that ten children are losing one or both legs, and that Gaza has become home to the largest group of amputees in modern history. Furthermore, pregnant women are three times more likely to miscarry and three times more likely to die from childbirth complications.
She expressed deep concern about the legislation currently being proposed to halt the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which would impact the provision of aid and essential services to millions of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
The UN official said, "We need to exert maximum influence to alleviate the suffering of civilians in the occupied Palestinian territory. We cannot pretend to be ignorant of what is happening, nor can we ignore what is happening."
With American and European support, Israel has been committing a genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 162,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 14,000 missing.
