Human Rights Ministry appeals to free detainees in Guantanamo

[28/July/2013]

SANA'A, July 28 (Saba) – Human Rights Ministry has appealed all international human rights organizations to intervene to the U.S. side in order to preserve the safety of the Yemeni detainees in Guantanamo.

In its statement issued Sunday, the ministry declared that it is watching with great interest what released in media about the difficult situations of the Yemeni detainees there, who begun an open-ended hunger strike since last February.

As the result of the ill-treatment they are suffering, the illegal indefinite detention is considered a contrary to all international conventions and breach of human rights standards, the statement confirmed.

The ministry expressed concern and regret over commitments made by the U.S. administration to close Guantanamo Bay, which till now has not been closed, despite the fact that the Yemeni government has renewed its demands for the release of its detainees and its readiness to receive them and provide rehabilitation centers for them to be reintegrating naturally in the community.
