Yemen seeks removal of Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab from piracy risk list
[18/June/2013]

LONDON, June 18 (Saba) - Yemen has called for the removal of the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait from the list of the risk of high seas piracy.

The call was made by Chairman of the General Authority for Maritime Affairs, Yasser al-Zamani, during a meeting at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization here on Monday.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the member states of the Djibouti Code of Conduct.

Al-Zamani briefed the meeting on the activities of the regional center for the exchange of maritime information of maritime piracy.

He further explained efforts made by Yemen in the fight against piracy, and the successes achieved by the center.

He said, "pirates were not able to seize any ships in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait recently, thanks to international efforts in dealing with the phenomenon of piracy."

Al-Zamani, therefore, called for "the removal of the Red Sea region, from Bab al-Mandab to the Suez Canal from the area of the high seas piracy list considering the lack of incidents of piracy in this region recently."

The Djibouti Code of Conduct, signed in 2009 deals with the repression of piracy and armed robbery against ships in the western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.
