Humanitarian catastrophe threatens Yemen for continuing detention of oil ships: Report
Humanitarian catastrophe threatens Yemen for continuing detention of oil ships: Report
Humanitarian catastrophe threatens Yemen for continuing detention of oil ships: Report
[10/October/2020]

SANAA, Oct. 10 (Saba) - Official and popular reactions are escalating against the backdrop of the continued US-Saudi aggression in detaining oil ships and their disastrous repercussions on the humanitarian situation in Yemen.

The continuation of the protest activities coincides with a suspicious international silence, which encouraged the countries of aggression to keep on detaining the ships of oil derivatives without taking into account the distress calls for most of the service and vital sectors in Yemen, especially the health sector, which is threatened to stop due to the stoppage of hospitals and health centers as well as running out of fuel.

26 million citizens are on the verge of the humanitarian catastrophe for the continuing detention of ships and its repercussions on various sectors, especially health and food security fields.

Yemen also suffers fines, including demurrage charges which further worsen the economic situation in the country.

Fines for detaining oil ships

Ammar Al-Adhruee, executive director of Yemen's Petroleum Company (YPC), affirmed that the aggression is still holding 19 ships off Jizan, including five ships have been held for nearly six months, four ships have been detained for five months, and the rest of the ships have been seized for three months.

Al-Adhruee indicated that the seized ships sustained financial losses exceeding Y.R 28 billion under the pretext of collecting tax and customs revenues that are baseless.

The aggression did not allow any ship to reach to the port of Hodeida except the ships of Debra on August 2, the YPC executive director said, adding the aggression coalition intends to push ahead of the humanitarian disaster for the Yemeni people.

If taxes and customs revenues are calculated, they will not exceed Y.R 11 to 12 billion, while the fines for the detention of oil ships amount to more than Y.R 28 billion borne by the Yemeni people, according to al-Adhruee.

Humanitarian Disaster

The executive director of the YPC warned of a humanitarian disaster threatening the Yemeni people if the service sectors stop, primarily the health sector.

He held the United Nations fully responsible for what will be going on in the coming days.

Al-Adhruee expressed the hope that the United Nations would return to its charters as well as for what it has been established for.

The laws of the sea prevent maritime privacy from confiscating oil and food ships, Al-Adhruee said, adding that all countries of the world must cooperate with any country to prevent any piracy at sea to which is held accountable by international law.

UN responsibility

The executive director of the YPC held the United Nations, aggression coalition, the economic committee at Hadi government, and aggression forces fully responsible for the piracy of oil derivatives vessels.

He stressed that the United Nations did not respond to Yemeni calls for releasing the detained ships, calling on everyone to stand up and demand the release of oil ships and not to intercept them in the future.

Increasing agricultural production costs

Ahmed Al-Khalid, executive director of the Grain Development and Production Corporation, said farmers are suffering from the continued detention of oil derivatives vessels, which has led to a significant fall in agricultural production of many agricultural crops.

He called upon the United Nations to take a clear position on the practices of the aggression coalition and its mercenaries, denouncing the suspicious silence of the United Nations and Humanitarian organization over the continuation of the aggression in detaining oil ships.
