More than 3,300 Russian tourists evacuated from Egypt: aviation official

[04/February/2011]

MOSCOW, Feb. 4 (Saba) -- Russian airlines have evacuated 3,332 Russian tourists from riot-hit Egypt on a volunteer basis, the Russian Federal Aviation Agency (Rosturism) said on Friday.

Russian airlines are going to make 50 charter flights to evacuate Russian tourists, but only a few tourists agreed to cut their vacations short and fly back, the Rosturism said.

"Tourists are being told that they should better to leave the resorts as soon as possible...many airlines are also halting flights to the country and travel agencies have stopped selling tours to Egypt," said the acting head of the Rosturism Alexander Radykov.

"However, flights to the resorts will continue until all tourists have been evacuated," he added.

According to the Rosturism, about 20,000 more Russians would be evacuated during this weekend.

Citing data from a major Russian travel agency Pegas Touristic, local media Tuesday said only 18 of 18,000 tourists who had bought a package tour asked to leave earlier.

So far, about 33,000 Russian tourists have been stranded in Egypt, most of them are in the Red Sea resorts of Hurgada and Sharm El Sheikh.

Supporters of Egyptian President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak have clashed with protesters against the president in recent days.

Egyptian Minister of Health Ahmed Farid said Thursday five people had been killed and more than 800 injured in the clashes so far.
