Turkey practises security for 2011 Winter Universiade Games


ANKARA, Jan. 24 (Saba) -- Turkey practised a field exercise on Monday for 2011 Winter Universiade Games, which will be hosted by Erzurum province of Turkey on 27 Jan-6 Feb, Xinhua News has reported.

A total of 100 of 300 security forces came from Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, for the security practice in Palandoken Mountains of Erzurum .

The field exercise in Palandoken, Konakli and Kandilli districts included wounded and hostage- taking operations, accompanying 6 dogs specialized in avalanche, bombs, search and rescue, said the report.

The gendarme teams carried a sportsman, who broke his leg according to a scenario of field exercise, to the area of jet-skis by air.

According to another scenario, a team of 11 sharpshooters entered a building and survived a hostage from the terrorists.

Erzurum Governor Sebahattin Ozturk was quoted as saying that the police and gendarmerie would be responsible for the security of the games.

"We don't expect these incidents would happen, but still we revised the possibilities. Our sportsmen and the ones coming abroad can be comfortable," he said.

The games will host nearly 3,000 sportsmen from all over the world that will compete in a total of 11 branches; Alpine skiing, ice hockey, biathlon, Nordic combined, curling, ski jumping, cross country, snowboard, freestyle skiing, figure skating and short track.
