EU welcomes Cancun Agreement on climate change

BRUSSELS, Dec 11 (Saba) -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso welcomed here Saturday the Cancun Agreement on climate change as "an important step towards a comprehensive and legally binding framework for global climate action," according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

"We congratulate the Mexican presidency of the Cancun climate conference on this success. The Cancun Agreement shows that the multilateral process can deliver," he said in a written statement.

On her part, Connie Hedegaard, EU Commissioner for Climate Action, said in a separate statement that The international community took the first steps towards a global climate deal in Copenhagen a year ago.

"However, the difficult negotiations in Cancun have shown that we have a long and challenging journey ahead of us to reach a legally binding global climate deal," she said.

Hedegaard called on all parties take domestic action to reduce or limit their emissions.
"Europe is willing to do its fair share of this global effort," she added.
