Obama confident START treaty to be ratified soon

WASHINGTON, Dec 8 (Saba) -- U.S. President Barack Obama voiced his confidence that the new START treaty with Russia will be ratified by the Senate soon, before the holidays according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
Following talks he held with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski in the White House, Obama told reporters that "respect to START, I feel confident that when basically the entire national security apparatus of previous Democratic and Republican administrations, our closest allies who are most impacted by relations with Russia.
He said that the new START treaty is important, adding that "we are going to be able to get it through the Senate".
He stressed "that's something that on its own merits is supposed to get done, needs to get done." "I am confident that we are going to be able to get the START treaty on the floor, debated and completed before we break for the holidays," Obama remarked. Meanwhile, a joint statement by Obama and Komorowski affirmed that the U.S. President "expressed appreciation for Polands contribution to increased worldwide nuclear security, including the removal of highly enriched uranium from the reactor in Poland." It added that President Komorowski "expressed Polands strong support for the prompt ratification of the New START Treaty, as it would bolster Polish and European security and contribute to the Non-Proliferation Treatys disarmament goals." The United States and Poland "also emphasized the continued need for practical actions to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and their delivery systems to states of proliferation concern and to terrorist groups," the joint statement said.
It added that the two countries "reaffirmed their commitment to work together under the Proliferation Security Initiative to counter illicit trade in WMD and missiles."
