Sudanese president vows not to expel southerner after referendum
[04/October/2010]

KHARTOUM, Oct. 3 (Saba) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir said Sunday that he would not expel any southern Sudanese citizens from northern Sudan if southerners opted for separation in the forthcoming referendum scheduled on Jan. 9, 2011, according to Xinhua.

"No southerner will be expelled from the north and their social, political and economic rights will be preserved. It is a direct responsibility and we will fully shoulder it", al-Bashir said.

"The southerners in northern Sudan, their families and their properties will be protected no matter what the result of the referendum is", he added.

The Sudanese president also criticized the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), the major partner in the Government of National Unity (GoNU), saying that "the National Congress Party ( NCP) has fulfilled all of its commitments regarding the items of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and the Sudanese Army completed redeployment with hundred percent according to the item of security arrangements, while the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) completed only 40 percent of its deployment."

He called on the SPLM to protect freedoms in southern Sudan and ensure a free, fair and transparent referendum. "We demand for provision of protection and freedoms for the supporters of unity in south Sudan."

Al-Bashir reiterated his commitment to accepting the result of the referendum, whether unity or separation, provided that it would freely reflect the will of the southern Sudanese voters.
