Iranian president says enemies exaggerate firecracker blast as " assassination attempt"

[05/August/2010]

TEHRAN, Aug. 5(Saba) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday denied the reports saying he was targeted by an assassination attempt, the local satellite Press TV reported, according to Xinhua.

The president said the enemies exaggerated a firecracker blast as an "assassination attempt", according to the report.

On Wednesday, several media, both home and abroad, reported that a home-made grenade exploded near Ahmadinejad's convoy when he was touring the western city of Hamedan.

"Yesterday, during the cabinet's trip to Hamedan province, someone threw a firecracker in front of the government motorcade out of joy and excitement," Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying on Thursday.

Ahmadinejad described the incident not newsworthy, saying the enemies spread the reports saying the president was transferred to an undisclosed place after surviving an assassination attempt.

The president cited that immediately after the incident, he delivered a speech in the Hamedan Stadium in front of thousands of people, the report said.

On Wednesday, Iran had denied the reports of the attack and said the explosion was caused by a firecracker set off by a man to hail the president's arrival, the official IRNA news agency reported.
