Violence claims 82 lives in Karachi as tension recedes

ISLAMABAD, Aug 5 (Saba) -- Tension started receding in Pakistans largest commercial city of Karachi as the death toll in three days of violence, triggered by the killing of a provincial lawmaker, crossed 82, said police and officials, according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
At least five incidents of violence were reported in Orangi town, Baldia town, Qasba colony and Chandni chowk areas of Karachi, the capital of Sindh province. According to police sources, fighting between rival groups in Qasba colony wounded at least thirty people including five women and three children. Sources told KUNA that the life was coming back to normal.
However, they added, the areas, being declared sensitive, were still under constant police watch and an operation was underway to nab the suspects, involved in violence.
A journalist, Rizwan Rahem, from Karachi said that petrol pumps and gas stations, and business and trade centers were being opened on Thursday. He said government and private offices were also partially opened but educational institutes remained closed.
Violence erupted in Karachi after a provincial lawmaker of Muhajir-dominated Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was gunned down on Monday by unknown gunmen. Since then, more than 82 people have been killed, and dozens have been wounded in violence-related incidents. Dozens of shops were also set on fire and several bazaars destroyed.
