Baghdad, August 03 (Saba) - Gunmen attacked a checkpoint in western Baghdad early Tuesday, killing five police officers, according to Qatar News Agency (QNA).

The gunmen used pistols equipped with silencers. Police officials said another officer was wounded Tuesday after a bomb attached to his vehicle exploded in the Hurriya district in northwestern Baghdad. Two bystanders were also injured, police said.

Separately, three roadside bombs exploded in two different neighborhoods in the Iraqi capital Tuesday, wounding six people. And in another incident, two mortar rounds landed in Mansour district in western Baghdad, damaging a nearby building.

The country is at a critical period as US officials continue with plans to end America's combat mission and draw down troops to reach 50,000 by the end of August.

According to the security agreement between the US and Iraq, all US forces are scheduled to leave the country by the end of next year.
