No win in war on terror unless terrorist sanctuaries destroyed outside Afghanistan: Official

[27/July/2010]

KABUL, July 27 (Saba) -- The top security adviser to Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday stressed that terrorists' safe havens are outside Afghanistan, saying the war will not be won unless their sanctuaries are destroyed outside the militancy- plagued country, according to Xinhua.

"Victory against international terrorism without destroying their sanctuaries outside Afghanistan borders has no meaning," Rangin Dadfar Spanta told a press conference here.

However, he did not name any country that supports or provides shelter to Taliban insurgents and associated militants.

He made these remarks in the wake of releasing over 90,000 pieces of documents, released by WikiLeaks.org -- a whistleblower website early this week that pointed to the civilian casualties caused by NATO-led troops and Pakistan intelligence agency's covered link and support to Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops in Afghanistan.

The report also accused Iran of backing Taliban fighters against NATO-led troops in Afghanistan.

"We have reiterated in the past that the fight against terrorism in not adequate to bring war in Afghan villages," Spanta who served as former minister in the past emphasized.

However, both Pakistan and Iran have rejected the claim of supporting Taliban militants in Afghanistan.

Earlier on Monday the spokesman for Afghan Presidential Palace Waheed Omar said that the leakage of U.S. military classified report has shocked the government of Afghanistan.
