[04/December/2007]

SANA'A, Dec. 04 (Saba) - The active volcano on the Red Sea Jabal al-Tair island in Hodeidah province resuming eruption again Monday morning.

A biology professor at Sana’a University Mohammed al-Qadasi said that the volcano in Jabal al-Tair returned to the previous rifts that eased for new activity.

Al-Qadasi expected that the volcano would remain active for long periods with some craters, noting that the active volcanoes don’t call for any concern that the eruption might reach other islands.

Geologists said that the Jabal al-Tair volcano erupted twice before in the 18th and 19th centuries and the last eruption was in 1883.

The Earthquake Observation Centre said it had recorded earthquakes in the Red Sea measured 2.0-3.6 degrees on the Richter scale.

Jabal al-Tair island is about 3km long and rises to a height of about 1,200 meters. It lies about 100km off the Yemeni coast and.
