Parties condemn corruption and calls for demonstrations

[03/December/2007]

SANA'A, Dec. 03 (Saba)- Some political parties have criticized the calls by Joint Meeting Parties, opposition parties, for "disingenuous demonstrations", asking for more punitive measures against corrupts.

The parties, included the ruling General People's Congress, the National Council for Opposition and Baath Socialist party, have urged the political leadership to take "sincere procedures against greedy and corrupts and those who block developmental process" as well as to activate the role of the National Supreme Anti-Corruption Authority.

The joint statement, came in a rally held in Taiz Sunday on the 40th anniversary of southern Yemen independence, November 30, and published by the official almotamar.net, accused the Joint Meeting Parties of "exploiting national occasions to spread lies about prices hikes and military pensioners".

The statement announced the support of those parties to constitutional amendments and the formation of the Supreme Commissions for Elections and Referendum from judges, the matter that JMP has refused.

The Joint Meeting Parties in Taiz accused the ruling party, in a rally they held Saturday on the same occasion, of "mobilizing employees and students in public schools to attend its rallies".

The secretary-general of Taiz Local Council Ahmad al-Haj has denied allegations of JMP and said employees and students attended rallies of GPC willingly.

"Unfortunately, the Joint Meeting Parties held their rally without calling other parties despite it is a national and valuable occasion", al-Haj told the daily al-Syasiya published by Saba.
