United Nations approves charter on migration

SANAA, Dec. 11 (Saba) - The international community has adopted the United Nations Charter on Migration adopted by 150 countries during the Intergovernmental Conference on Migration.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a speech at the opening of the conference that the Migration Charter would be a road map to address the problems

The non-binding agreement is a framework for international cooperation.

Guterres pointed out that migrants benefit from human rights in general and women and girls living in especially difficult situations, accounting for half of the world's 260 million migrants.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations warned of the high number of deaths of irregular migration, where the number of migrants who have died since 2000 about 60 thousand migrants, despite the movement of more than 80% of the world's migrants between countries in a safe and orderly.

The charter is to be submitted to a final vote for approval on Dec. 19 before the UN General Assembly.

The Charter includes the defense of human rights and the rights of children and the recognition of national sovereignty. It also proposes a mechanism to assist countries facing migratory waves, especially in the exchange of information and the integration of migrants, and helps to prevent arbitrary arrests.

The International Marrakesh Conference, organized by the United Nations, is attended by about 150 Member States of the United Nations and will last for two days.
