SANAA, Nov. 18 (Saba) - German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said that the creation of a European army is necessary to enable European countries to protect the interests of Europeans in the event of crises.
"Politicians should create decision-making bodies so that Europe can respond quickly to the issue of military operations against potential crises," she told a newspaper on Sunday.
"The European army, which guarantees the protection of the population of the community, needs not only good equipment, military and joint maneuvers, but also a political will to protect European interests firmly when a crisis arises," she added.
French President Emmanuel Macron proposed earlier the creation of a "European army" independent of the United States to ensure cyber-security. He pointed out that Europe is currently facing many attempts to interfere in its internal democratic processes and cyberspace.
He stressed that the EU must defend itself against China, Russia and the United States.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has endorsed the idea of creating the European army.<
