SANAA, Nov. 14 (Saba) - Bangladesh police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at a group of opposition party supporters in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday as tension mounted weeks before the general election.

Bangladeshi police and media sources said Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activists responded to police actions by setting fire to police vehicles and a number of motorcycles.

"Our forces were attacked for no reason ... they were only trying to run the traffic but suddenly they were targeted," said police spokesman Massoud Rahman.

BNP supporters were accompanying an election candidate as he received his election credentials from the party's office in the city.

The police initially asked the group, the number of which was more than 500 participants, to disperse because it caused a traffic jam, but an altercation ensued and a fight broke out between party and police supporters.

The party said 12 of its supporters were wounded, while police said at least 20 policemen were wounded.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam denounced the police's actions as "unfair" and part of the government's plan to exclude the party from the December 30 elections.
