Amnesty International condemns the suppression of pro-Palestine protests at American universities
[25/ April/2024]
LONDON April 25. 2024 (Saba) - Amnesty International condemned what it described as “the racist and oppressive treatment” of protests in support of Palestinian rights at American universities, stressing that protesting against what is being committed in Gaza has become “a matter of great importance.”

It said, in a statement, that the protests denouncing the Zionist war in the Gaza Strip and supporting Palestinian rights in general on the campuses of some universities “were met with racist and oppressive responses from university administrations.”

It explained that these practices conflict with the need for universities to "facilitate and protect their students' right to protest."

The human rights organization's statement came to denounce the position of the administrations of some leading universities in the United States, led by Columbia , Texas, and their use of the police to break up protests in support of the Palestinians and arrest a number of students participating in them.

Accordingly, Amnesty International urged university administrations in the United States to “protect and facilitate the right of all students to peacefully and safely protest, as well as to organize counter-protests (referring to protests that conflict with the positions or tendencies of the university administration) on their campuses.”

It noted in its statement that higher education institutions “are an essential entity in helping students understand and claim their human rights.”
