ADDIS ABABA April 24. 2024 (Saba) - The United Nations said on Tuesday that more than 50,000 people have been displaced from their homes in northern Ethiopia by fighting that has erupted over a dispute over a disputed area.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) last night quoted authorities in the disputed region between the Tigray and Amhara regions as saying: "The number of people displaced by armed clashes in the town of Alamata and Raya Alamata since April 13 has exceeded 50,000 people."
The November 2022 peace deal ended a two-year war in Tigray, but clashes then erupted in other parts of the country, including the Amhara and Oromia regions.
Authorities in the Tigray region have warned of imminent famine, due to drought and the effects of the war.
The United Nations said more than 21 million people needed assistance in Ethiopia. Ethiopia's humanitarian needs are estimated at $3.24 billion this year, including to help some four million internally displaced people.
Earlier, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki accused the United States of being behind the war that broke out between the Tigray Liberation Front and the Ethiopian government in November 2020.
