UN committee calls on the Saudi regime to release detainees
[13/December/2018]

SANAA, Dec. 13 (Saba ) - A UN Human Rights Committee called on the Saudi regime to release more than a dozen human rights activists detained in its prisons who were tortured and ill-treated during interrogation.

"Activists such as Jane Al-Hathul, Iman Al-Nafjan, Aziza Al-Yousef, and prominent women's rights activist Samar Badawi, Naseema Al-Sada, Mohammed Al-Rabiah and Ibrahim Al-Medaimig are being held in Dhahban prison near Jeddah since May since 2018 without charge," Reuters quoted a committee of six independent members saying in a letter posted on the Internet, "noting that they were tortured, sexually harassed and subjected to other forms of ill-treatment during interrogation.

The committee called for their release and six other activists, including blogger Raif Badawi, who was publicly flogged for expressing dissent on the Internet and serving a 10-year sentence.

The United Nations issued a report last June describing the Saudi regime as using anti-terrorism laws systematically to justify its repression, arrests and torture of human rights defenders, many of whom have been in prison for years, while others were executed in flagrant violation of justice and human rights. .

With regard to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in his consulate in Istanbul on October 2, the committee is seeking information on whether an impartial investigation into the involvement of senior officials in Khashoggi's torture and murder has been opened.

Members of the US Senate confirmed after a statement from the CIA that they were confident that Mohammed bin Salman was responsible for Khashoggi's death.
