SANAA, Nov. 15 (Saba) - Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed his country's readiness to work on a peace treaty with Japan, noting that the adoption of the 1956 declaration as a reference to negotiations requires further work to include many ambiguities.
"Prime Minister Shinzō Abe said during us meeting yesterday that his country is ready to resume negotiations to reconsider this peace treaty on the basis of the 1956 declaration," Putin said at a press conference held at the end of his participation in the East Asia Summit in Singapore.
"But this will require additional work, Because there are many points of ambiguity, " he said.
The Russian president recalled that the 1956 declaration states that the Soviet Union is ready to hand over two of the islands claimed by Tokyo after the signing of the peace treaty, adding "However, the declaration "does not indicate on what basis it should be done."
The dispute between Russia and Japan is based on four islands in the Sea of Okhotsk, in the 19th century, when Tokyo took control of the islands after the defeat of of Russia in the 1904-1905 war.
