LONDON May 02. 2024 (Saba) - Republicans are taking advantage of the protests against the Zionist war on Gaza, taking place on universities from New York to California, to attack US President Joe Biden for failing to calm protests and portray the United States as out of control under his leadership, the Financial Times said today.
The unrest has amplified tensions within Biden's Democratic Party over his handling of the Middle East conflict and distracted some attention from the impeachment trial of Donald Trump, the former president and presumptive Republican nominee in November's election.
Trump campaigned in Wisconsin this week, taking advantage of a break from court proceedings as dramatic scenes unfolded as police raided a student-controlled building at Columbia University in New York and protesters attacking a pro-Palestinian camp at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Democrats also accused Republicans of hypocrisy, noting that many of them defended the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks on the Capitol, and Trump's comment that there were "very good people on both sides" at the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Protests against the war on Gaza have been ongoing at several US universities for more than a week, and quickly spread to several European countries, despite the arrests and repression they are witnessing.
